Education and training in schools

We can provide education and training sessions to your students, teachers and parents in the Greater Wellington Region.

Student Sessions

Our Health Educator is available to come to your school and provide 1 or 2 sessions to each class. If you are interested in this or a longer or more intense programme, simply click here to email her directly.

The aim of these sessions is to:

  • Provide accurate information to students about eating disorders and their effects.
  • Prevent the onset of eating disorders by looking at other ways to cope with stressful events.
  • Teach students the signs and symptoms of an eating disorder so they know what to look out for in friends and family members.

In one session we would cover such topics as:

  • What is an eating disorder
  • The different types of eating disorders
  • Why someone might develop an eating disorder
  • What happens to the body and the mind when someone has an eating disorder
  • What you can do if you think a friend has an eating disorder

The second session looks at body image and self-esteem. Sessions can be tailor-made to fit your particular needs.

"BODYTHINK"

We also offer an excellent self-esteem workshop called "BodyThink", which was created by the Melbourne Butterfly Foundation and Dove Cosmetics. Throughout this workshop students learn media literacy, and develop an awareness for the messages that are sent their way in the media. This workshop is designed primarily for students under the age of 13, but can be tailored to suit the needs of older students also.

Teacher Training

Training is also available to teachers. Our Health Educator can come out to your school during the day or evening. Typically these sessions cover the following topics:

  • The different types of eating disorders
  • What to look out for in your students
  • What you can do to help prevent eating disorders
  • What you can do to help a student who may have an eating disorder
  • Where to get help

Sessions can be tailor-made to fit your particular needs.

Parent Education

Ideally, when students are taught, a parent's night would also be held. These take around 2 hours, and typically cover topics such as:

  • The different types of Eating Disorders
  • What to look out for in your children
  • What you can do to help
  • Where to get help
